How to Choose a Mattress for Your Sleeping Position
Your usual sleeping position is a useful starting point for comparing comfort. A few simple observations can make your next store visit easier.
Start with your familiar positions
Before comparing mattresses, spend a few mornings noticing how you use the bed. Do you settle on your side, wake on your back, or change positions often? Write down what feels comfortable and what makes you want to move. You do not need to monitor yourself all night.
In the showroom, begin in your usual position. On your side, notice the feeling beneath your shoulder and hip. On your back, notice whether you can relax without adjusting repeatedly. If you sleep on your stomach, try that position too. These are comfort observations, not a test of perfect posture.
Compare movement and your pillow
Then roll over slowly. Does turning feel easy, or do you feel as though you must climb out of a hollow? Sit up and get out of bed using your normal routine. If getting in and out matters to you, give that part of the comparison as much attention as the first impression.
Keep the pillow in mind. Try a pillow similar to the one you use at home, then ask to compare another height if your neck feels awkward. Change one part of the setup at a time so you can tell which difference you prefer.
Keep the research in perspective
Research has not established one ideal sleeping position for every adult. A 2019 review found too few high-quality studies to give a firm answer about posture and spinal symptoms. Use your position to guide a practical comparison, while following any individual advice from your healthcare professional.
Try each mattress in your familiar positions, then check how easily you can turn and get up.
