How to Test a Mattress in Store: A Simple Comfort Checklist

A little structure makes mattress comparisons easier to remember. Use the same short routine on each bed, then revisit your favorites.

Prepare a manageable comparison

Walking through a showroom can give you plenty of first impressions and very little to remember afterward. Arrive with a short note about your current bed: one thing you enjoy, one thing you want to change, and the positions in which you usually sleep. This gives the conversation a useful starting point.

Ask to begin with three noticeably different feels. This is simply a manageable comparison, not a scientific rule about the right number of choices. Give each bed a fair try instead of moving on after pressing the surface with your hand.

Repeat the same comfort check

The Better Sleep Council recommends lying in your normal sleeping position and allowing time to assess comfort. Once settled, notice your shoulders, hips and middle. Then turn over, sit up and get out of bed. Use the same sequence each time so you are comparing similar experiences.

Record three brief observations: where the bed feels comfortable, anything that keeps drawing your attention, and how easy it feels to move. Use words that mean something to you, such as springy, enveloping or steady. Ask the salesperson to explain unfamiliar terms in relation to what you can feel.

Revisit your favorites

Return to your two favorites after trying the others. Keep the pillow and position similar for this final comparison. There is no showroom test that can guarantee how a bed will feel through a full night, but a consistent routine gives you clearer information than a quick sit. Leave with notes you can understand later, even if you decide to think it over.
