The mattress guide
Saatva Solaire: choose firmness and movement separately
Start with what each person wants to control. Then match the mattress, base and bedding to those everyday tasks.
What the firmness remote changes
Saatva's Solaire guide describes two air chambers in queen and king mattresses, allowing separate firmness settings. The remote selects a side, adjusts inflation and recalls saved settings. These are manufacturer instructions checked October 20, 2026; we have not tested the mattress. (Solaire controls guide)
Raising the head or foot requires an adjustable base. Solaire's firmness adjustment and the base's movement are separate functions. (Solaire specifications)
Begin your decision with two separate questions: do you want to change the surface feel, and do you want to change your resting position? You may care about one, both or neither. Describing the task first gives the seller a clear requirement to explain and demonstrate.
Decide which movements need to be independent
Saatva says Solaire Upper-Flex with its matching Adjustable Base Plus allows separate head positions while the foot section moves together. Solaire Split King and Split Cal King use two mattresses and matching split bases for separate head and foot movement. The manufacturer specifies its corresponding bases for these configurations. (Solaire specifications)
Consider a hypothetical couple: one person wants to read upright while the other wants to lie flat. That identifies a head-position requirement. Now ask what each person wants beneath their legs during the same activity. The first answer should not stand in for the second.
Write down a few situations you actually expect to use: reading before sleep, resting together or returning the bed to your preferred sleeping position. For each one, identify what should move and what should stay still. Ask for a demonstration of that combination, including how each person returns to their starting position.
Treat the demonstration as a check of the controls and arrangement. It cannot establish that the position will improve sleep or that either person will enjoy the mattress through a full night. Our couples guide below addresses the separate question of comparing comfort preferences.
Include the fitted-sheet shape in the decision
Solaire's FAQ specifies an Upper-Flex fitted sheet for its split-top mattresses. Split King and Split Cal King require the corresponding two fitted sheets. A king-size label alone does not describe both arrangements. (Solaire specifications)
Before counting your existing bedding as part of the new setup, bring its labels or dimensions to the seller. Ask about the fitted sheet, protector and any topper separately. Get the answer for the proposed configuration, especially if keeping a particular accessory is important to you.
Think through changing and laundering the bedding as well as using it. Decide which spare pieces you would want on hand, and include those choices in the purchase comparison. This turns an appealing demonstration into a setup you have considered living with.
If you already own an Upper-Flex base
Saatva's Upper-Flex programming instructions distinguish split and synchronized modes. They also separate bases delivered January 2021–May 2024 from those delivered June 2024 onward, with different synchronization requirements. An older saved instruction sheet may therefore describe a different setup. (Upper-Flex setup guidance)
Before reusing a base, give Saatva its model information and delivery date. Ask it to confirm the mattress pairing and applicable instructions. Have the installer explain which mode is appropriate and demonstrate the completed setup; avoid borrowing a button sequence from a video about another generation. (Upper-Flex setup guidance)
Keep the confirmed mattress configuration, base details and bedding list together. Your final explanation should name the everyday function you chose and how the complete setup provides it. That makes the decision easier to check when the order is prepared and when the bed arrives.
